Ukraine and Germany scale drone production and innovation
Ukraine is rapidly scaling its drone production, with reports indicating an output of approximately 500,000 drones per month to defend against the Russian invasion. This evolution includes significant software and hardware innovations. Ukrainian firms like Buntar Aerospace are developing remote-control software that allows pilots to operate reconnaissance drones from thousands of kilometers away to ensure crew safety. Additionally, Kaban Robotics is adapting existing vehicles, such as the US Humvee, for remote operation.
In a parallel development, the German-American defense company Auterion and its Ukrainian joint venture partner, Airlogix, have begun mass production of over 5,000 long-range kamikaze drones. This project, valued at approximately 300 million euros, is part of Germany's support for Ukraine. Production is slated to be completed by mid-2027 across sites near Munich and in eastern Germany. These drones utilize artificial intelligence to resist electronic countermeasures and include models with ranges of up to 1,500 kilometers.
