Lithuania urges EU to ban Russian grain transit
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius has called on the European Union to ban the transit of Russian grain through the bloc and to impose sanctions on Russian agricultural oligarchs supporting the war. Sinkevicius argued that Russia is utilizing European and Baltic infrastructure to export its own grain while simultaneously attacking Ukrainian ports and vessels in the Black Sea.
In response to these concerns, Lithuania has implemented stricter origin controls on grain transit from Russia and Belarus since early September. Estonia has already banned such transit as of October 1, and Latvia is seeking closer cooperation with its Baltic neighbors on border controls.
Separately, Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Taras Vysocki expressed opposition to an EU accession model that would impose permanent restrictions on Ukraine's ability to export agricultural products to the Union. He emphasized that Ukraine should be viewed as a potential provider of food security and processed goods rather than just a threat to EU farmers.
