Ukraine and Middle East conflicts face distinct humanitarian and tactical challenges

The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East present distinct legal and humanitarian challenges. In Ukraine, the war is characterized by a foreign invasion of a sovereign state, granting the nation the right to self-defense. In the Donbas region, the intensity of combat is exacerbated by the use of Russian FPV drones. These small, high-speed drones target vehicles on the roads, forcing locals to use plastic netting stretched over highways in an attempt to intercept them, though this method provides only partial protection.

In the Middle East, the situation involves a long-standing struggle over occupation, sovereignty, and self-determination for the Palestinian people. While the October 7 attacks by Hamas against Israel involved deliberate crimes against civilians, the conflict is rooted in decades of issues regarding Gaza, the West Bank, and settlements. The International Court of Justice has recently reaffirmed the rights of the Palestinian people within this complex historical context.
