Ukraine anti-corruption agencies raid Prosecutor General’s Office
Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) have launched a major operation, dubbed ‘Operation Carthage,’ targeting a criminal organization allegedly operating within the Prosecutor General’s Office. The group is suspected of protecting a network of fraudulent call centers and laundering illicit proceeds.
Serhii Kropyva, the deputy head of the International Legal Cooperation Department and head of the Cyber Department, has been detained in connection with the investigation. Investigators have identified at least five participants in the organization so far. The group allegedly used its influence to shield scam operations and laundered significant sums, with some reports suggesting over 20 million hryvnias were spent on luxury items, real estate, and jewelry.
During the operation, NABU conducted searches at the offices of the Prosecutor General’s Office, as well as premises linked to deputy prosecutor Mariia Vdovychenko and Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper. While the Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed the searches at its offices and stated it would cooperate with the investigation, it denied that searches were conducted at Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko’s private home or personal office. Kravchenko has denied any involvement in protecting illegal call centers and has ordered mandatory polygraph tests for all staff involved in overseeing such cases.
