Ukraine marks 35 years of independence amid energy infrastructure attacks
Ukraine is marking its 35th anniversary of independence amid intensified Russian missile and drone attacks targeting its energy infrastructure. Recent strikes have hit gas production facilities, coal mines, and thermal power plants, including a DTEK facility that was forced to cease electricity generation following an August 18 attack.
Reports indicate that the Ukrainian power grid is highly vulnerable, with an Energy Community report stating that 40% of Ukrenergo’s 141 major high-voltage substations were damaged or destroyed by April 2024. Concerns have been raised regarding insufficient air defenses and internal corruption affecting the protection of the grid.
In response, the European Union has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Since the 2022 invasion, the EU and its member states have provided 220.2 billion euros in humanitarian, financial, and military aid. The European Commission also noted the commencement of payments from a 90 billion euro loan intended for defense and reconstruction, alongside the adoption of a 21st package of sanctions against Russia.
