Ukraine reports first-ever naval battle between unmanned surface vessels

The Ukrainian Navy has reported the first-ever naval engagement between unmanned surface vessels (USVs) in the Black Sea. During the operation, a Ukrainian Sargan-3000 USV, equipped with a 12.7 mm Protector remote-controlled turret, successfully located and destroyed a Russian unmanned vessel.

The engagement was conducted in coordination with the Ukrainian military intelligence agency (HUR). This event marks a significant milestone in the evolving nature of maritime warfare, as both Ukraine and Russia increasingly deploy autonomous and remotely piloted systems to strike targets and infrastructure.

Ukraine has significantly expanded its maritime drone operations in both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. In a single campaign this summer, Ukraine reported striking 105 Russian ships and various maritime logistical targets in the Sea of Azov. Meanwhile, satellite imagery suggests Russia is developing its own capabilities, including the construction of a dedicated drone port in occupied Crimea.
