Ukraine celebrates Independence Day from the Soviet Union

Ukraine is celebrating its Independence Day, marking the anniversary of August 24, 1991, when the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of Independence. This historic move restored the nation's sovereignty and severed ties with the Soviet Union.

The celebration also highlights the significance of the national flag. The blue and yellow colors, representing the sky and wheat fields respectively, have deep historical roots, appearing in the symbols of the Zaporozhian Cossacks between the 15th and 18th centuries and during the Ukrainian national revival of the 19th century.

In a message from the Ukrainian embassy, the colors were described as symbols of courage, indomitability, and the struggle for freedom and democratic values.
