Ukraine central bank reports slight reserve dip, hryvnia strengthens

The National Bank of Ukraine said its international reserves fell by $70.4 million, or 0.1%, in July, ending the month at $51.2 billion. Net reserves declined by $668.9 million to $36.3 billion, while the share of U.S. dollar assets dropped to 64.7% and the euro share rose to 27.0%. Gold made up 7.0% of the reserves. In July the central bank received $1.6 billion in foreign‑currency inflows, including $683.3 million from the IMF, $498.7 million via World Bank accounts and $458.6 million from EU‑backed loan bonds. Revaluation of financial instruments added $300.6 million, and foreign‑exchange interventions totalled nearly $4.79 billion. The bank said the reserve level can cover about 4.2 months of imports.

On August 6 the NBU set the official hryvnia rate at 44.69 per U.S. dollar, a 6‑kopeck gain, while the rate against the euro slipped to 51.63 per euro. Interbank quotes were similar, and commercial banks reported comparable movements. The stronger hryvnia reflects the bank’s recent policy actions amid ongoing foreign‑exchange market volatility.
