UN documents 1,004 cases of sexual violence in Ukraine
The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has documented 1,004 cases of sexual violence in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. According to the report, 89 percent of these cases are attributed to Russian forces, including members of the military, prison services, and national security agencies. The remaining 11 percent were attributed to Ukrainian authorities.
Danielle Bell, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, noted that the documented cases represent only a fraction of the actual occurrences. The investigation, which relies on confidential interviews, court records, and official documents, highlights a pattern of torture and intimidation. Reported abuses include gang rape, genital mutilation, and the use of electric shocks on genitals.
The victims span a wide age range, from a four-year-old girl to an 82-year-old woman. While many victims were men in detention centers, women and children were also affected, particularly in Russian-occupied territories. The UN has called on both Russia and Ukraine to conduct thorough and impartial investigations into these allegations.
