Ukraine confirms combat use of Swedish ASC 890 radar aircraft
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Swedish-supplied ASC 890 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, also known as the Saab 340 AEW&C, have been in combat use since March 2026.
These aircraft function as mobile command centers, utilizing Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology to detect maritime and aerial targets from an altitude of approximately 6,000 meters. With a detection range of up to 450 kilometers, the systems allow for the early identification of Russian drones, missiles, and aircraft.
By transmitting critical data to fighter pilots, the ASC 890 enables Ukrainian aviation to engage targets while keeping their own radar systems inactive to avoid detection. This integration is intended to synchronize Ukraine's air defense into a networked system similar to NATO standards, providing vital reaction time for air defense units.
