Ukraine conflict: Pope calls for peace amid rising geopolitical tensions
Pope Leo XIV has issued a call to end violence in Ukraine, urging parties to “open hearts to dialogue and peace.” During an Angelus address in St. Peter's Square, the Pontiff expressed hope that recent efforts to resume negotiations will yield concrete results and create space for diplomacy.
The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate in complexity due to cross-attacks on energy sources and residential areas. In response to the upcoming winter energy crisis, the German Ministry of Economy and Energy has allocated 250 million euros to repair damage to the Ukrainian system. Serhiy Koretskyi, former CEO of Naftogaz, has recently taken the role of Ukrainian Prime Minister.
Geopolitical tensions are rising across Europe as Russia, NATO, and the EU strengthen defensive and offensive systems. Recent incidents include alleged Russian sabotage in Leipzig, Germany, and threats of retaliation against Norway following its deployment of American Tomahawk missiles and artillery near Russian borders. Finland has also faced similar tensions. Meanwhile, Russia is reportedly planning a mass mobilization of between 300,000 and 600,000 new recruits following upcoming elections in Moscow.
