Ukraine conflict: Territorial gains in Donetsk and new German aid pledged

Ukrainian forces have regained territory in the northern Donetsk region through ‘Operation Vivaldi,’ utilizing ground robots and drones to disrupt Russian advances near Lyman and prevent the encirclement of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.

During an unannounced visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged extensive military and financial assistance to Ukraine. Discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky focused on air defense, energy infrastructure recovery, and long-range weapon capabilities.

The United Nations reports a 55% increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026, with over 15,000 people killed or injured. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis due to intensified attacks on civilian infrastructure.

In Europe, rising government debt and high interest rates are causing instability in French markets, leading to concerns regarding the potential intervention of the European Central Bank.
