President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that Russia is expanding its military operations to target Ukraine's digital infrastructure, specifically data centers and internet service providers. On Friday, a Russian drone strike hit a business center in Kyiv, resulting in four deaths and damage to a data center. The strike also killed a 14-year-old boy, identified by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an Israeli citizen. Russia acknowledged the strike on the data center, asserting it was being utilized by Ukrainian military intelligence.
The impact on civilian life has been significant. On Wednesday, approximately 100,000 households in the Kyiv region experienced internet outages. In the city of Lutsk, officials reported that electronic information boards at public transport stops were non-functional due to the damage sustained by Kyiv-based data centers.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that targeting these facilities disrupts life-saving information flows, such as missile and drone alerts. While some companies are moving data to foreign servers to mitigate risks, Ukrainian officials noted that the country's decentralized internet network should prevent a total loss of connectivity.
