Ukraine declines Australian offer of Tiger combat helicopters
Ukraine has declined a proposal from Australia to receive 22 Eurocopter Tiger combat helicopters. While discussions regarding the transfer of these aircraft had been ongoing for several years, the request was officially withdrawn earlier this year, according to Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Mirosnichenko.
Several logistical and technical factors contributed to the decision. These include high hourly flight costs, the difficulty of sourcing spare parts, the specific technical condition of the Australian fleet, and the complexities of the configuration in which they would be delivered. Additionally, the integration of American equipment into the Australian Tiger variant presented further complications.
Australia is currently phasing out the Tiger helicopters to replace them with American Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters. The decision by Kyiv suggests that Ukraine prefers to strengthen its aviation capabilities through more compatible platforms that are easier to maintain within its existing industrial support networks in Europe.
