Germany begins mass production of 5,000 combat drones for Ukraine

Germany has commenced the mass production of over 5,000 medium- and long-range combat drones destined for Ukraine. The production initiative is a joint venture between the German-American defense company Auterion, which provides software and operating systems, and its Ukrainian partner Airlogix, which handles hardware.

Manufacturing has begun at a facility near Munich, with plans to expand production to a second location in eastern Germany. The project is part of a German government contract estimated to be worth approximately 300 million euros, with completion expected by mid-2027.

The drones consist of two models: one for medium-range operations and another with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers. Often referred to as kamikaze drones, these one-way strike aircraft are designed to carry explosive payloads of up to 100 kilograms or more. To counter electronic warfare and navigation disruption, the drones utilize artificial intelligence for guidance and target identification.
