Ukraine introduces ‘Army of Robots’ to deploy humanoid machines on the battlefield

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has introduced the ‘Army of Robots’ initiative, a project aimed at developing humanoid-like robotic systems to perform dangerous frontline tasks. Presented at the IT Arena conference in Lviv, the plan seeks to create an ecosystem of engineers, startups, and investors to accelerate military robotics development.

The initiative focuses on producing relatively simple, low-cost machines—potentially for as little as $10,000 each—capable of tasks such as reloading weapons, swapping sensor batteries, or launching drones. Fedorov aims to eventually substitute infantry with these systems to reduce human casualties. The project targets a combat debut for humanoid robots within six months and a robotic assault operation within a year.

However, the proposal has met skepticism from some Ukrainian experts. Boris Drozhak of Rovertech noted that humanoid systems may be more expensive and less stable than existing wheeled or tracked unmanned vehicles. Additionally, former Deputy Defense Minister Kateryna Chernokhrenko suggested that Ukraine’s immediate priorities should be cheaper cruise missiles and air defense systems rather than complex humanoid robots.
