Ukraine dismantles Russian spy network targeting F-16 and Mirage 2000 data

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has dismantled a Russian military intelligence network designed to gather data on Ukrainian aviation infrastructure. The operation targeted information regarding the deployment and movement of F-16 and Mirage 2000 fighter jets.

The network was reportedly initiated by a resident of Lviv who managed an aviation-focused Telegram channel. After posting photos of Ukrainian combat aircraft in pro-Russian chat groups, the individual was recruited by the Russian GRU. This individual then recruited 13 other people across various regions of Ukraine to assist in intelligence gathering. These recruits, often unaware of their involvement in espionage, used high-quality cameras to photograph military airfields, aircraft, flight crews, and technical personnel.

According to investigators, the group documented takeoff and landing times, often using professional equipment concealed in abandoned buildings or open areas near airbases. The captured data was uploaded to an online repository accessible by the Lviv-based coordinator, who then transmitted the information to a handler in Russia. Additionally, the SBU noted a security breach involving an air squadron commander who independently provided helicopter flight schedules to the network.
