Ukraine Embassy condemns Russian propaganda in Serbian election campaign
The Ukrainian Embassy in Serbia has issued a strong condemnation regarding the use of the current Serbian election campaign to spread Russian propaganda. The diplomatic mission described the exploitation of the war in Ukraine for political gain as a ‘scandalous act’ and a ‘cynical manipulation’ of sensitive social issues.
The reaction follows statements made by Slobodan Dimitrijević, president of the Serbian-Russian Movement, during a gathering of the Socialist Party of Serbia. The Embassy noted that attempts to frame Russian aggression as a struggle for shared spiritual and historical values between the Russian and Serbian peoples are an abuse of the conflict to gain electoral support.
Ukrainian diplomats highlighted the significance of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a pillar of Orthodoxy and noted the damage the complex has sustained due to military actions. The Embassy emphasized that such rhetoric contradicts Serbia's official foreign policy, which formally recognizes and supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
