Ukraine energy crisis: Archbishop warns of civilian impact
Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the Major Archbishop of Kyiv, has raised concerns regarding the humanitarian impact of the conflict in Ukraine, specifically focusing on the targeting of critical energy infrastructure. He noted that Russian attacks aim to isolate cities such as Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv by depriving them of heat, electricity, and water. He highlighted a recent attack on October 14 that damaged 30 energy facilities, leaving 600,000 people without power.
Shevchuk emphasized that international negotiations regarding energy resources must prioritize the welfare of civilians—including schools, hospitals, and nurseries—over purely economic or political interests. He also noted that while there have been mentions of a so-called ‘energy truce’ between Russia and Ukraine, neither party has confirmed such an agreement.
Broader discussions on the conflict emphasize the necessity of maintaining communication channels and dialogue to prevent war from becoming a permanent state. The ongoing war continues to have global economic implications and raises concerns about potential escalation involving other nations.
