Kyiv enters survival mode following intensified Russian strikes on energy and transport infrastructure

Kyiv has entered a survival mode as intensified Russian strikes target critical energy and transportation infrastructure ahead of winter. Recent attacks have struck key bridges over the Dnipro River and major electrical substations, including the 750 kV Kyivska, 330 kV Severnaya, and 330 kV Nyvky facilities.

These strikes have caused widespread power outages, emergency shutdowns of all three Kyiv metro lines, and disruptions to water supplies. In some areas, water pumps failed due to the lack of electricity. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko noted that the city is preparing alternative pontoon bridges to maintain connectivity between the riverbanks and is stockpiling fuel, food, drinking water, and backup heating systems.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported significant damage to the national power grid and warned of a difficult winter. He emphasized the urgent need for additional energy equipment and air defense systems, particularly Patriot batteries, to intercept ballistic missiles. Beyond the capital, power outages have also been reported in the front-line regions of Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia.

While Ukrainian authorities are working to restore the grid, experts warn that the situation may persist throughout the winter as Russia shifts tactics to target high-voltage transmission lines and use jet-powered drones to exhaust air defense capabilities.
