Ukraine faces debate over potential conscription of women

Discussions regarding the potential conscription of women into the Ukrainian military are gaining traction among some Ukrainian officials and Western supporters. Proponents of the idea, including former Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, have suggested that drafting women—specifically childless women—could double the country’s mobilization resources, citing Israel as a model.

Keith Kellogg, a former special envoy for Donald Trump, has also endorsed the proposal, stating it is important for women to serve as part of society. Some media outlets have framed the concept of female military service as a feminist victory.

However, critics argue that such a move could exacerbate Ukraine’s existing demographic crisis. The country is currently facing a mortality rate nearly four times higher than its birth rate, alongside massive human casualties and large-scale emigration. These factors have created significant challenges for the future viability of the state, including potential labor shortages and a shrinking population capable of funding the welfare system.
