Ukraine faces economic downgrades and casualties amid ongoing conflict
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has lowered its economic growth forecasts for Ukraine due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and ongoing export challenges. The bank now expects GDP growth of only 1.5% by the end of 2026, down from a previous estimate of 2.2%. Future growth for next year is also projected at 2.2%, lower than the earlier 4% forecast.
Economic pressures include a potential $5 billion loss in export revenue—equivalent to 2.5% of Ukraine's annual GDP—driven by risks to grain and metal exports. Additionally, a Russian ban on diesel exports following Ukrainian strikes on refineries has impacted global prices.
In a separate development, OTP Bank confirmed that a 26-year-old female customer service specialist employed at one of its Ukrainian branches was killed during a Russian drone attack in Kyiv. The bank stated it is providing financial and moral support to the victim's family.
