Ukraine faces increased Russian pressure on eastern fortress belt

Russian forces are increasing pressure on Ukraine’s eastern defenses, specifically targeting the fortress belt of industrial centers including Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Druzhkivka, and Kostyantynivka. These cities serve as a defensive barrier between Russian forces and the open plains to the west. In Kramatorsk, guided bombs and drones have damaged infrastructure and destroyed nearly all bridges.

The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces infiltrated approximately 124 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in August. While the advance is described as slow and costly, with Western intelligence estimating roughly 40,000 Russian casualties per month, the incremental gains continue to pressure Ukrainian strongholds in the Donbas.

In the Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine has begun installing anti-drone nets over roads near the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. These barriers, stretched between metal poles, are designed to entangle kamikaze drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to protect military and civilian transport. This reinforcement occurs near the border with Belarus, an area previously occupied by Russian troops during the initial stages of the invasion.
