Ukraine faces massive veteran support challenge
Ukraine's newly appointed Veterans Minister, Vitalii Kim, is facing the challenge of supporting over 1 million veterans amidst an ongoing conflict and limited budgetary resources. During a recent visit to the United States to consult with government officials and NGOs, Kim described the situation as having to ‘build the engine while driving the car.’
After more than four years of war, many Ukrainian veterans suffer from physical injuries, including tens of thousands of amputations, as well as psychological trauma. Projections suggest the number of veterans could rise to 3 million by the end of the war. This demographic shift is significant for the national economy, as veterans and their families represent approximately 30 percent of the workforce.
The scale of the crisis is compounded by a shrinking national population, which has fallen from 44 million pre-war to under 36 million. Unlike in some other nations, Ukrainian veterans must reintegrate into a country still facing economic instability and continuous Russian military strikes.
