Ukraine hosts 'Alliance of the Willing' summit to request air defense

Ukraine is hosting a summit of the 'Alliance of the Willing' in Kyiv, a group of major European supporters. The meeting coincides with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence on August 24. The summit is co-chaired by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is attending the event, marking his first official foreign trip. European Council President António Costa is also expected to participate in person, while other leaders are slated to join remotely.

The summit comes amid increased Russian pressure and frequent ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, which have resulted in civilian casualties. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is using the forum to urgently request enhanced air defense capabilities, specifically highlighting the need for more anti-aircraft weaponry to protect the capital.
