Ukraine integrates Finnish ItO 90M air defense systems

Ukraine has confirmed the deployment of Finnish ItO 90M short-range surface-to-air missile systems within its air-defense network. The systems, which were transferred without prior public announcement from Helsinki, are being used to defend against aircraft, cruise missiles, and jet-powered drones.

The ItO 90M is a Finnish variant of the French Crotale NG system, mounted on a Sisu XA-181 armored personnel carrier chassis. This configuration provides greater mobility compared to the towed versions used by the French military. Both versions utilize the VT-1 interceptor missile.

In a separate effort to bolster air defenses, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has proposed a mechanism for international partners to transfer Patriot air defense missiles from existing stockpiles immediately. This would be in exchange for future deliveries originally contracted by Ukraine. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara has also held discussions with Swedish officials regarding the acceleration of IRIS-T missile deliveries, Swedish man-portable air defense systems, and the upcoming arrival of Gripen fighter jets.
