Ukraine intelligence seeks info on new Russian ‘Susanin’ drone technology
The Ukrainian Intelligence Service is seeking information regarding a newly discovered device named ‘Susanin’ found in recent Russian attack drone shipments. The device, described as a small cylinder equipped with a camera lens, provides long-range Russian drones with optical capabilities that allow them to operate without radio signals or satellite communication.
Experts warn that if deployed at scale, this module could allow Russian kamikaze drones to bypass the electronic jamming systems currently relied upon by Ukrainian air defenses. The technology has been integrated into the Geran-5 jet-powered kamikaze drones.
Ukraine faces significant challenges in countering these continuous technological upgrades to Russian UAVs. Kyiv has noted that existing interceptor missiles are insufficient to combat the increasing sophistication of these drones, leading to urgent requests for increased weapons supplies from European partners. Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly prioritizing interceptor missile supplies for the Middle East amid escalating tensions with Iran.
