Carpathian Eight (C8) regional bloc launched by President Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the launch of the 'Carpathian Eight' (C8), a new regional geopolitical and economic bloc. The inaugural summit was held in the Bukovel ski resort in western Ukraine, bringing together representatives from Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, and Hungary, with active involvement from the European Union.

The C8 initiative aims to deepen integration through cooperation in security, energy, logistics, cross-border economic ties, and support for local communities. To facilitate this, organizers presented a regional portfolio of 34 projects valued at approximately 115 billion euros. Additionally, an 'Investment Lab' showcased roughly 90 joint projects requiring an estimated 9.4 billion euros.

The summit took place amid heightened regional tensions. While leaders like Poland's Donald Tusk and Romania's Nicușor Dan attended to show solidarity, other members, including Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia, have declined to provide direct military assistance to Ukraine. Furthermore, the period was marked by Russian strikes in the Zhytomyr region, which resulted in two deaths and two injuries.
