Russia and Ukraine exchange massive aerial strikes amid peace talk efforts
Russia and Ukraine engaged in intense aerial combat on October 22-23, involving large-scale missile and drone strikes. Russia launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, including the Antonov aeronautical assembly plant in Kyiv, the Southern Bridge, and port facilities in the Odesa region. These strikes hit energy facilities, residential buildings, and commercial centers, reportedly leaving over 500,000 people without electricity in several regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of using cluster warheads during the attacks on Kyiv. The strikes resulted in multiple civilian casualties, including at least two deaths and dozens of injuries across various regions.
In retaliation, Ukraine launched a massive drone assault against Russia. Moscow reported hundreds of drones targeting the capital, leading to the suspension of flights at all four major Moscow airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—and an evacuation of the Moscow-City business district. Ukrainian drones also struck the Lipetsk region and an electronics plant in Oryol, Russia.
The escalation follows diplomatic meetings in St. Petersburg between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. While Putin indicated Moscow is prepared to resume U.S.-mediated peace talks in November, Zelenskyy stated the continued bombardments demonstrate that Russia’s stance toward the conflict has not changed.
