Ukraine military reforms command structure to empower frontline leaders

The Ukrainian military is implementing a strategic shift in its command structure to empower frontline leaders and move away from rigid, Soviet-era top-down management. This initiative aims to foster greater initiative among battle-tested troops, allowing them to make autonomous decisions regarding infantry tactics, drone warfare, artillery, and logistics.

As part of this transformation, 103 experienced squad commanders were recently pulled from the front lines to undergo an intensive three-month leadership course. The program, which follows NATO-standard planning and command simulations, is organized by the Military Institute of the National University of Kyiv with support from the charity Come Back Alive. The training focuses on a younger generation of leaders, many in their twenties and early thirties, to ensure they can adapt to the complexities of modern battlefield conditions.

This cultural shift comes amid efforts to address criticisms regarding heavy losses and the treatment of soldiers. New commander-in-chief General Mykhailo Drapatyi has pledged to prioritize soldier welfare and modernize command practices to improve overall military effectiveness.
