Ukraine military strategy and public resolve amid ongoing conflict
Analysis of the ongoing conflict reveals a disconnect between Ukrainian military ambitions and the actual outcomes of major operations. Since 2022, Kyiv has frequently announced offensives intended to force Russia toward peace or achieve a decisive turning point, such as the 2023 summer offensive and the 2024 incursion into Russia's Kursk region. However, these operations have often resulted in limited territorial gains or required eventual withdrawal, failing to break the current military stalemate.
Despite these challenges and increasing Russian aerial capabilities, including the use of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles, Ukrainian public sentiment remains distinct from Western perspectives. While 2024 data from the European Council on Foreign Relations indicated that only 10 percent of Europeans believed Ukraine would win, approximately 60 percent of Ukrainians maintained belief in victory. This resilience is attributed to psychological coping mechanisms, a sense of a just defensive struggle, and historical awareness of Russian military instability.
