Ukraine offers to purchase Patriot missiles amid Russian strikes
President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine is prepared to purchase the Patriot missile systems it requires for air defense, rather than relying solely on military aid. This shift in strategy aims to address concerns in the United States regarding the depletion of American defense stockpiles by framing the request as a commercial transaction. Zelensky has requested approximately 5% of U.S. Patriot inventory to secure the country through the upcoming winter, noting that Ukraine currently receives only about 1% of its necessary interceptors.
The push for increased air defense comes amid intensified Russian strikes. Recent massive bombardments involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones have targeted civilian infrastructure in Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv. These attacks have caused significant damage to residential buildings, schools, and hospitals. In Kyiv, reports indicate at least 12 to 13 deaths and dozens of injuries following recent strikes. The shortage of PAC-3 interceptors remains a critical vulnerability, as batteries cannot effectively counter ballistic missiles without sufficient ammunition.
