Ukraine official predicts ceasefire may not occur until spring 2027

Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Office of the President, suggests that while peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia could resume as early as September, a functional ceasefire may not be achieved until the spring of 2027.

Budanov noted that the diplomatic process might restart following Russian parliamentary elections and ahead of the US Congressional elections. A potential catalyst for renewed talks includes the anticipated visits of US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to both Kyiv and Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope for meeting these envoys in the coming days, noting that preliminary dates for their visit to Kyiv have been established.

Despite the potential for renewed dialogue, significant obstacles remain. President Zelenskyy has reiterated that Kyiv will not accept territorial concessions in the Donbas region. The timeline for a lasting cessation of hostilities remains uncertain as both sides navigate conflicting requirements for a formal agreement.
