Kramatorsk evacuations ordered as Russian forces approach city outskirts
Ukrainian authorities have initiated the mandatory evacuation of 525 children from the city of Kramatorsk due to intensified Russian attacks. The decision follows reports that Russian military forces are now within 10 to 20 kilometers of the city's outskirts.
Kramatorsk and Sloviansk serve as a critical defensive belt in the Donetsk region of the Donbas. The escalating combat puts these urban centers under significant pressure, as they represent a core component of Ukraine's regional defense infrastructure. Despite the proximity of the front line, more than 83,000 residents continue to live in the Kramatorsk and Sloviansk metropolitan areas.
Military analysts from the Institute for the Study of War noted that in June 2026, Russian advances averaged approximately one square kilometer per day. A loss of the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk defense line could allow Russian forces to extend their operations further west and north toward Dnipro and Kharkiv.
