Ukraine PM requests interceptor missiles from Japan

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi has expressed a strong hope for Japan to provide air defense weaponry, specifically interceptor missiles, to protect Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. In an interview with Kyodo News, Koretskyi emphasized that these systems are essential for surviving the upcoming winter heating season amid intensifying Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Ukraine is facing a depletion of interceptor missile stocks, leading to increased civilian casualties. While Japan has revised its principles regarding the transfer of defense equipment and technology, current regulations generally prohibit arms exports to countries actively engaged in conflict. Any provision of lethal weaponry would require a formal equipment and technology transfer agreement and a political decision from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
