Ukraine-Poland relations see decline in public approval
A recent sociological study conducted by Operational Sociology LLC in June 2026 reveals a significant shift in how Ukrainians perceive their relationship with Poland. According to the survey of 2,007 adults in government-controlled Ukrainian territories, only 2.4% of respondents view the relations between the two nations as entirely friendly. While 16% described them as mostly friendly, a majority of 56% characterized the relationship as mixed, stating it is friendly in some matters but hostile in others.
The data suggests a growing distance between the two populations, contradicting previous narratives of unbreakable friendship. The survey was conducted during a period of heightened tension, following controversial actions such as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy naming a military unit after historical figures associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).
Additionally, the research touched upon historical awareness among Ukrainians. While Stepan Bandera remains a widely recognized figure, other historical leaders like Yevhen Konovalets and Andriy Melnyk were less known to significant portions of the surveyed population.
