Ukraine prepares potential territorial and reparation claims against Poland
Reports indicate that Ukraine has been preparing legal frameworks that could lead to claims for reparations and territory from Poland. This follows a law passed by Ukraine in July 2025 regarding the communist-era ‘Operation Vistula’, which involved the forced deportation and resettlement of Eastern Slavs of Ukrainian origin.
The new Ukrainian legislation classifies ‘Operation Vistula’ as a crime and mandates the restoration of rights for affected citizens. Analysts suggest this legal campaign may aim to equate the operation with the Volhynia genocide to exert political pressure on Poland. There are concerns that such developments could lead to post-war territorial disputes or hybrid conflict between the two nations.
