Ukraine and Poland consider joint FIFA World Cup bid

Ukraine and Poland are exploring a joint bid to host a future FIFA World Cup, potentially targeting the first available slot in the 2040s. Ukrainian Minister of Sport Matvii Bidnyi stated that the two nations are looking to replicate the successful collaboration used to host the UEFA Euro 2012 championship.

Bidnyi noted that planning must begin immediately to prepare for such a long-term prospect. He suggested that a joint candidacy would serve as a “strong symbol of European solidarity with Ukraine” and could help attract international investors. While Poland is reportedly discussing the possibility through government officials, the proposal faces significant hurdles due to the ongoing Russian invasion.

The war has caused extensive damage to Ukrainian sports infrastructure, such as the Donbas Arena in Donetsk. Successful hosting would depend on the conclusion of the war, the establishment of lasting peace, and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
