Ukraine Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigns amid corruption probe
Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has resigned following a major corruption investigation conducted by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). The investigation, known as Operation Carthage, targeted a criminal network suspected of taking bribes to protect fraudulent call centers that engaged in telephone scams and laundered millions of dollars in assets.
During the probe, authorities conducted searches at the Prosecutor General's offices. Investigators identified a network involving high-ranking officials, including Serhii Kropyva, the deputy head of the International Legal Cooperation Department. Kropyva has been arrested and remanded in custody with bail set at approximately 120 million hryvnias ($2.7 million).
Kravchenko has denied all allegations of involvement in the scheme, describing his resignation as a “political decision” to prevent the office from being used as a tool for political confrontation. He maintains that the accusations are unfounded. The scandal occurs at a sensitive time for Ukraine, as the country faces intense pressure to demonstrate progress in anti-corruption reforms as part of its path toward European Union membership.
