Ukraine protests erupt over dismissal of Defense Minister Fedorov

Mass protests have erupted across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Kharkiv, following the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on July 15, 2026. Demonstrators, many of whom are young people and war veterans, are demanding Fedorov’s reinstatement and greater transparency in government decision-making.

Fedorov, a tech-focused leader credited with modernizing Ukraine’s military through drone technology and innovation, was reportedly dismissed due to disputes with the military leadership. Following the protests, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also removed Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, replacing him with Mykhailo Drapatyi, though this has not quelled the unrest.

Ukraine is currently operating under acting Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara, as the Verkhovna Rada has yet to confirm a permanent successor. Protesters have expressed concerns over corruption and the need for continued defense reforms. Fedorov has stated that Ukraine is engaged in a 'technological war' and suggested that the country could be capable of striking Russia with domestically produced ballistic missiles by the end of 2026.
