Ukraine requests billions from EU for Patriot missiles and energy repairs
Ukraine has formally requested several billion euros from the European Union to bolster its air defense capabilities, specifically targeting the purchase of US-made PAC-3 Patriot missile systems. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the receipt of the request, noting its high value for Ukraine’s defense needs. In a separate effort to stabilize Ukraine’s energy sector, Germany has committed an additional 250 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. This funding, distributed via the KfW Development Bank, is intended for urgent repairs to energy and heating infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks. Germany remains the largest contributor to this fund, having provided a total of 810 million euros to date.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara has emphasized the urgency of these requests, stating that the country requires approximately $27 billion in additional defense funding. He also called for the acceleration of a previously approved $104 million EU military assistance loan and requested that funds earmarked for 2027 be brought forward to meet immediate needs caused by intense aerial attacks.
