Italy and France to provide Ukraine with SAMP/T air defense systems
Italy and France have reached an agreement to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities through a military aid package valued at approximately 3 billion euros. The deal includes the provision of four SAMP/T NG air defense batteries, which are capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, along with Aster 30 missiles.
To support these systems, the package includes seven radars: six manufactured by the French company Thales and one by the Italian company Leonardo. The financing for this operation is expected to be provided via the European Union's loan mechanism for Ukraine, which includes provisions for both budget support and military procurement.
Reports indicate that Italy intends to deliver Aster 30 missiles from its own military reserves by October. Additionally, the agreement aims to grant Ukraine greater autonomy by allowing for the local production of Aster 30 missiles. While the full details of the military shipments have been kept confidential by the Italian government to manage domestic political sensitivities, the systems are expected to arrive in Ukraine in phases, with some components arriving as early as next year and others by 2027.
