Ukraine reconstruction and drone technology drive new market interests

The demand for drones and autonomous systems is undergoing structural shifts driven by military modernization and expanding commercial applications. Axel Belorde of TMX VettaFi notes that decision-makers are increasingly adopting these technologies to gain asymmetric advantages, replacing aging equipment with more cost-effective, lightweight solutions. Beyond defense, drones are seeing increased use in policing, border security, and disaster response.

In parallel, the economic landscape in Ukraine is showing signs of recovery. Following a 30% GDP contraction in 2022, Ukraine's economy is projected to grow by 4.5% this year, with 90% of companies remaining operational. The estimated cost for reconstruction and recovery is approximately $589 billion, according to assessments by the Ukrainian government, the World Bank, the EU, and the UN.

Key sectors identified for reconstruction include transport, energy, and housing, each requiring roughly $90 billion. Investment opportunities are being channeled through specialized financial instruments, such as the Defiance Ukraine Reconstruction UCITS ETF, which targets companies involved in infrastructure, defense, and energy transition. This includes both Ukrainian firms like Swarmer and Kyivstar, and international corporations such as Caterpillar, Siemens, and Rheinmetall.
