Russia and Ukraine exchange 540 prisoners of war

Russia and Ukraine have completed a major prisoner exchange, with each side receiving 270 individuals. The operation, facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, marks one of the largest exchanges in recent months.

Among the released Ukrainians are nine civilians and several military personnel, including members of the Azov Brigade, the National Guard, and various branches of the armed forces. Notably, five Ukrainians previously believed to have died in the 2022 Olenivka prison explosion were among those returned. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that many of the released had been in captivity since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

On the Russian side, released soldiers were sent to Belarus to receive medical and psychological assistance before being transported back to Russia. The exchange follows humanitarian negotiations involving various international mediators.
