Ukraine relies on 16,000 foreign volunteers amid manpower shortages

Approximately 16,000 foreign volunteers from 72 different countries are currently serving in the Ukrainian armed forces, according to military officials. Nearly 40% of these foreign fighters originate from Latin American nations. Kyiv has previously expressed intentions to increase the proportion of foreign personnel in assault and infantry units to as much as 50% to address manpower shortages.

Reports indicate that many foreign recruits, particularly those in units such as the Khartia Brigade’s 23rd Assault Regiment and the Revanche Battalion, have faced high casualty rates in sectors including Kupyansk, Kostyantynivka, and Kharkiv. Some fighters have reportedly been killed during their first or second missions after receiving minimal training. Recruitment efforts often utilize social media platforms to promise high wages, which average around $6,700 per month.

In a separate development, Russian authorities stated they have convicted 36 foreign nationals from 13 countries for participating in the invasion of the Kursk region. Those convicted include citizens from the United States, Georgia, Lithuania, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and several European nations.
