UN reports 15,000+ civilian casualties in Ukraine
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk reported that civilian casualties in Ukraine have increased by 55% compared to the same period last year. During the first eight months of the year, approximately 15,280 civilians were killed or injured, averaging more than 400 victims per week.
The report, presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, highlights that the casualty rate rises to 62% near the front lines. Türk described the conflict as a human rights catastrophe that is intensifying weekly, causing unimaginable suffering and threatening regional stability.
Key findings in the report include alarming levels of sexual violence used by Russian forces against civilians and prisoners of war as a means of torture and intimidation. Additionally, the Commissioner noted that Ukraine has become a 'laboratory for drone warfare,' with short-range drones killing civilians and obstructing humanitarian aid delivery.
