Ukraine reports rising civilian casualties and record Russian military losses
Ukrainian authorities and military officials have reported significant escalations in casualties resulting from the ongoing conflict. The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office stated that since February 2022, 19,349 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and over 55,000 have been injured. Additionally, more than 19,000 children have been forcibly displaced by Russia.
Data from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine indicates an upward trend in civilian deaths. Between January and October 23, 2026, 2,960 residents were killed, including 87 children, representing a 16 percent increase compared to the full year of 2025. Ukraine has registered over 266,000 war crimes since the start of the full-scale invasion, though only 317 individuals have been convicted.
On the military front, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia suffered a record daily loss of 2,250 soldiers on October 21, 2026. This marks the highest single-day casualty rate since the invasion began. British intelligence estimates total Russian military casualties, including killed and wounded, at approximately 1.5 million. Since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian military estimates suggest Russia has lost roughly 363,820 personnel.
