Ukraine sanctions ‘Masha and the Bear’ creators over propaganda concerns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed decrees imposing sanctions on the creators and distributors of the popular Russian animated series ‘Masha and the Bear’. The measures target the production studio Animaccord, its founder, and several key individuals, including the screenwriter and director.

Ukrainian authorities, including the Ministry of Culture, claim the series serves as a vehicle for Russian propaganda and a tool of cultural soft power. Officials argue the content disseminates pro-Russian narratives disguised as children’s entertainment, posing a threat to national security. Specific criticisms have been leveled at episodes featuring Soviet-era symbols, such as NKVD-style clothing and tank helmets.

The sanctions include the freezing of assets within Ukraine, a ban on the series’ distribution, and the blocking of its social media accounts. Ukraine has also called on international platforms to restrict the monetization and dissemination of the content.

The Kremlin has condemned the move, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Ukraine has ‘declared war on cartoons’ and characterizing the decision as an example of the ‘ugliness’ of the Kyiv regime.
