Ukraine sanctions ‘Masha and the Bear’ animated series
The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture has announced measures to limit the distribution of the popular children's animated series ‘Masha and the Bear’. On August 21, the ministry imposed sanctions against the series' producers and distributors, effectively blocking the content within Ukraine.
Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetyana Berezhna stated that Russian cultural products serve as “an instrument of influence and propaganda,” noting that Russia reaches millions of children through such media to generate significant benefits. The Ukrainian government views the series, produced by the Russian studio Animaccord, as a tool for cultural propaganda that promotes a positive image of Russia.
Concerns regarding the content include historical references to the Soviet Union. For example, one episode features a character wearing a cap associated with the NKVD, the Soviet secret police.
