Ukraine says about 16,000 foreign volunteers are serving in its armed forces

Ukraine's military ombudsman Olha Reshetilova announced that roughly 16,000 foreign volunteers from at least 72 countries are currently serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. About 40% of these volunteers come from Latin American nations.

Reshetilova told diplomats from foreign missions in Kyiv that a dedicated working group has been created to address the rights and interests of foreign soldiers throughout their service cycle, from recruitment to discharge and reintegration. Since the office opened on Jan. 27, it has received more than 300 complaints from foreign personnel, their families, or authorized representatives, covering issues such as pay, material support, health care and status designation.

The office is also establishing formal channels for embassies and consulates to coordinate with Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while volunteers and families can submit requests directly. Ukraine is preparing regulations for private military and security companies, aiming to leverage veteran expertise abroad after the war. A recent salary increase for Colombia’s armed forces was noted as a factor that could affect the flow of Colombian volunteers.
